The Alta Mogiana region

3 de Jul, 2026 Por Bourbon Coffee

Recognized as one of the country’s most important producing hubs, Alta Mogiana spans from northeastern São Paulo to southwestern Minas Gerais. Its 23 municipalities share an exceptional terroir, combining ideal soil, climate, and altitude geared toward the excellence of specialty coffees. Furthermore, this agricultural powerhouse harvests around 4 million bags per year.

The Historical Consolidation of Alta Mogiana

Alta Mogiana boasts over two centuries of continuous history in coffee farming. Above all, the consolidation of this production hub stems from an exact combination of natural aptitude and socioeconomic development.

As such, the region’s prominent role in producing specialty coffees is directly supported by three structural factors:

Soil and climate aptitude (Edafo-climatic): The union of rich soil, high altitudes, and a well-defined climate establishes the ideal agronomic environment for cultivating superior beans.

Migratory dynamics: The massive arrival of immigrants, mostly Italian, provided the workforce and agricultural expertise needed to expand the plantations.

Logistical efficiency: Overcoming transport bottlenecks in the late 19th century enabled the large-scale distribution of local production.

From the same historical perspective, production growth accelerated definitively when the Companhia Mogiana de Estradas de Ferro (Mogiana Railway Company) began cargo transportation. Indeed, this infrastructure completely transformed the local economic reality.

Consequently, the 1885 railway solved crop distribution challenges and officially named the territory. Specifically, the railway line operated as the central logistical axis to move coffee bags from the farms to the market.

The Geography of Alta Mogiana

The Alta Mogiana region features a highly specific set of geographical, geological, and climatic factors that favor the cultivation of high-quality coffee:

Relief and altitude: The region sits on a plateau of gentle hills in northern São Paulo state and the Rio Grande Valley in Minas Gerais. Altitudes range from 900 to 1,000 meters. It is worth noting that this is one of the key factors that facilitates the mechanization of the fields.

Climate and temperature: The region has an average temperature of 20°C. In fact, the average temperature in Alta Mogiana stays around 21°C in the summer, whereas in the winter it drops to 17°C.

Rainfall and water regime: Alta Mogiana features a highly satisfactory water supply and rainfall regime. To illustrate, annual precipitation is around 1,623 mm, with a well-defined rainy season between October and April.

Soil: The territory features high soil heterogeneity. Because they respond very well to acidity correction and fertilization technologies, these soils became highly productive and well-suited for coffee cultivation.

The Alta Mogiana Coffee Profile

Featuring varieties such as Red Catuaí, Yellow Bourbon, Obatã, and Yellow Catucaí, the coffees are characterized by intense sweetness, a heavier body, and balanced acidity with a long, pleasant finish. Ultimately, these are some of the sensory characteristics that experienced Q-Graders describe during tastings.

Mechanization

Due to its plateaus and low mountain ranges, a large portion of the harvesting phase in Alta Mogiana is done by machines. Consequently, this has contributed to lower operational costs and high yields, employing advanced technology during the harvest.

In this way, with a history marked by great achievements, Alta Mogiana proudly holds its prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) as proof of its excellence. Crucially, the great differentiator of this terroir is its ability to unite the best of both worlds: ensuring a high volume of supply without ever compromising on unparalleled sensory quality in the cup.
