The Cerrado Mineiro is located in the northwestern region of the state of Minas Gerais and has established itself as one of Brazil’s leading coffee-producing regions.

Spanning 55 municipalities, the region produces an average of 5 million bags per year. This volume of high-quality Arabica coffee comes from approximately 4,500 producers.

History and Evolution in the Coffee Sector

The Cerrado was not always the agricultural powerhouse it is today. Its drier climate and partially acidic soils initially posed significant challenges to coffee growers.

That began to change in 1970, when producers from Paraná and São Paulo, driven out by devastating frosts that had caused enormous losses in their home states decided to explore the Cerrado in search of areas less vulnerable to extreme cold.

The early years were demanding. Unlocking the region’s soil fertility required intensive application of agricultural science and technology: lime corrections, targeted nutrition programs, and irrigation management. Once these challenges were overcome, the land rewarded the effort, with soil quality improving dramatically and productivity rising exponentially.

Geography and Terroir

Having overcome the region’s initial obstacles, producers were able to take full advantage of the characteristics that make the Cerrado ideally suited for coffee cultivation. Its climate defined by two well-differentiated seasons, with hot and rainy summers followed by dry winters aligns perfectly with the crop’s annual cycle. Combined with a relief characterized by vast plains, these conditions enabled the region to become highly productive and widely recognized for high-scoring coffees.

Quality and Denomination of Origin (D.O.)

In recognition of its consistency and distinctiveness, the Cerrado Mineiro became the first region in Brazil to receive a Denomination of Origin (D.O.).

The D.O. seal certifies that the beans are genuinely sourced from that specific territory, while also guaranteeing full traceability from farm to cup.

Brazil’s Most Technologically Advanced Producing Region

The Cerrado’s flat topography enabled coffee farming to be highly mechanized, making large-scale production viable without compromising quality or consistency. Farms were designed from the ground up with precise row alignment of the coffee trees. In parallel, agronomists and scientists worked on genetic improvement to develop cultivars with uniform ripening, optimizing automated harvesting and enabling rigorous control of production and crop management indicators.

Bourbon Specialty Coffees in the Cerrado Mineiro

Bourbon Specialty Coffees has been working with the Cerrado Mineiro since the beginning of its operations, recognizing the region’s full potential a unique terroir, consolidated technological infrastructure, and producers deeply committed to excellence. Over more than 25 years, the company has built something that goes beyond commercialization: a close-knit network of relationships with approximately 90 producers across the region.

This work is anchored by a dedicated sourcing office in Campos Altos, positioned at the heart of the Cerrado. That local presence is not merely operational it is strategic. Being close to producers allows Bourbon to understand each harvest’s challenges, identify the best opportunities, and conduct the rigorous curation that ensures the consistency of selected lots.

The result of this long-term partnership translates into both volume and trust: an average of 100,000 bags commercialized per year to Bourbon’s clients around the world figures that reflect not just scale, but the strength of a relationship built season after season, lot after lot.

The Consolidation of Brazil’s Leading Coffee-Producing Region

The Cerrado Mineiro stands as a clear example of how technology and precise crop management can unlock the full potential of a unique terroir. By transforming challenging soils into one of the world’s most technologically advanced and productive origins, the Cerrado has secured its position as a global benchmark for the production of specialty coffees of the highest standard.
